First there was the two of us, newly married and starting our new journey. Hopes and dreams and rainbows and unicorns, well not really, but we had our hopes and dreams.
Then there was three, how lovely, then there was four. Great. The hopes and dreams of just us two had begun, we were on track, they just were slightly extended to include two more but no problem. We’ve got this.
Our little house was just a squeeze but we laughed, we cried, had sleepless nights and walked around the kitchen on auto pilot putting on the coffee whilst the little darlings finally slept. This was home. Our life. Happiness on a stick!
The limbs got longer, the tummies forever ‘starving’, the music got louder and the friends kept on coming. The couches got smaller, the television got commandeered, makeup got smudged. Talk about squeeze! The garden shed was looking good.
We went and got a bigger house.
Then there was three, one off to college, one down, one to go. Next one off to an apprenticeship. Two down, there was just two again. With space to breathe, couches to choose from, fridge still half full, peaceful reads and a television silent and time to lie in if wanted, it seemed like we were getting back to ‘how it was BK’ (Before Kids).
We got a smaller house.
One came back, then there were three. We were polite, patient, understanding. This was home, our life, we managed. One got married, then there were five. We shuffled up at the dining table, home cooking filling the tums and warmed the hearts, then two went home. Still smiling!
New little darlings arrived. Then there were six and then seven. Grandma and Grandad’s house was full of love, care and adventure and most of all, much needed help.
We got a bigger dining table.
Four went home, one moved out (again)………. but “school holidays are really so much fun at Grandma and Grandad’s house and dinner is always yummy” that we usually numbered four or six, usually seven with the occasional fling of an eight. It was a squeeze. We laughed, we cried, shook our heads as the limbs got longer, the tummies were ‘starving’ and the couches got smaller. The garden shed looked good once more. We bought a bigger house.
